Now, while recovering from Covid, I am appreciating in new ways the disruptions and disconnections this uninvited visitor can bring. I wanted to create this little video exercise as an offering to community - apologies in advance, the video (and me) is raw and unedited :-)
This exercise is for anyone engaged in a project of sorts - dissolving borders between creative, informal, academic, personal and so forth. It is inclusive as it is intended for use at any (multiple) time(s) along the journey of a process. It can be helpful in response to times when we are getting a bit lost, confused, overwhelmed or pulled in multiple directions. Coming back to our relationship with our project can be a lovely practice of accountability to vision, intention and preferred approach.
By shifting the gaze to the relationship we have with the project and taking time to articulate our location moment by moment we have the chance to make visible themes of:
- connection/shared & difference/disconnection
- how power operates between ourselves and the project and other significant figures
- where our gaze may become fixed/stuck/narrowed
- what might be getting in the way of the relationship we would prefer to have with the project
- clarity in how we are participating in the relationship and discerning whether this is by our own defined agency or other forces at play
- treasured contributors and marked absences
The video runs for 20mins however if you wish to pause as you go along you might like to allow 30mins for the exercise.
Enjoy!
Your reflections are welcomed in the comments below - perhaps you might share your image, name of the project you chose to bring along and something about what you noticed through the exercise.
