In this longer video I speak about bringing an ethic of disobedience and disruption to the more well known ideas about how therapeutic conversations 'should' start and unfold. I discuss some of the ideas I wish to disrupt, why and speak about three invitational practice ideas for beginnings.
If you'd like to engage with some more 'Beginings' questions as a way of unpacking what you are experieincing unfolding at the begining of new intentional/therapeutic relaitonships feel free to give these a go...they might be helpful all together or taken individually as lines of enquiry. You might wish to try them out for yourself or with the person/people you are meeting with...
- what does it mean for me personally to initiate new relationships? What helps me to 'get to know' the other person/people? What is preferred in the way I introduce myself?
- what am I being introduced to in these intitial conversations? (This question invites us to create some space from the 'details' or stories/problems to refect on where we might be asked to stand or respond from to themes of experience)
- what/who am I introducing the person/people to? (what parts of my identity, role, intentions, ideas, concerns etc)
- how might the way 'we co-construct beginnings' be as a replication of ideas/discourses that have had a fair bit to say/influence about the person and the circumstances?
- what has been attended to in our beginnings so far? and what is the effect? On account of this, what is our emerging understanding of shared intention?
- what has been missed out/evasive(idea/experience not person) so far that I would like to find ways with the person to include? Do we have a shared understanding of mutual consent or edges to our scope of co-research as defined by the person and/or by us(!)?
- how might the way 'we co-construct beginnings' be a response to the problems/effects that the person is facing?
In my work responding to people studying or working in Narrative Therapy I find myself sharing experiences and learnings from collaborative conversations spanning the last 18 years. These videos respond to certain aspects of narrative therapy ideas and practice and are intended to be practical offerings to spark ideas and possibilities. These videos are my sharings through the lens of my location, experience and context - you are welcome to take up or pass by however best suits you and your context!
